Read an Excerpt

Trevor stared at the pool, envisioning himself in a 'dead man' float. He didn't deserve any better.
He retired early only to find his sleep riddled with fitful memories of Porsche. Porsche and that stupid goat. Porsche conquering her fear to ride the horse. Porsche in his arms. He settled into a deeper slumber. Porsche laughing beside him in the darkness. A scream shaking the mountain down around them. The ground sinks, taking her away, only her hand reaching for him. Panic as she slides out of reach. The panic.
He shuttered awake, his memory intact. The cold, hard facts of what he had done bellowed at him from the darkness, bawling for him to change the past. She was his friend, she trusted him and he had led her to her death. A cold dark death. No wonder he wanted to die. He even deserved to die and suffer before doing so.

Excerpt

The convention had been long and tiring, and Fiona stifled a yawn. Then she caught the eye of the man in the elevator, the man whom she'd met just hours before, and giggled.

“Long day, eh?” he said.

Jesse Fairlane is missing. Max Larkin and Special Agent Michaels are unsure if this is related to a recent case involving human trafficking or something else. On top of trying to locate his partner, Max has to make a decision as to whether he leaves Rockton to work with the FBI or stays to become captain at the local police department. As Larkin, Michaels, and the other detectives work furiously to find Jesse before it's too late, Max finds himself despairing they'll find her alive. He struggles to maintain his relationship with Veronica and trying to be a friend to Jesse's girlfriend, Melissa, all while following a maze of clues to Jesse..

She stared around, taking in the artwork on the walls, the deep pile of the carpet under her feet, and the shining wood of the doors in the corridor, as the man held his key card against the lock, buzzing them into his suite. The interior astounded her. He'd laughed when she had stoutly declared that she wouldn't go to his hotel room, and now she could see why. This was an entire apartment with no bed in sight to remind her of the things she refused to do on a first date. There were enormous plate-glass windows lording over stylish furniture. A big bowl of fruit sat on the counter of a well-equipped kitchen.

“Wow!” she said, unable to stop herself.

“Quite something, isn't it?” he said. “Glad I’m expensing this rather than footing the bill.”

He was a sales rep, he'd told her. Must be pretty good at his job to merit a hotel like this.

“So, Fiona Turner,” he said, eyes flicking down to the name badge that was still pinned to her chest. “Let me get you a drink. I'd say we deserve one, wouldn't you?”

She nodded and walked to the windows to look out over the glowing city below as he strode to the kitchen area. She heard the pop of a cork as she tried to locate landmarks below her. She felt the cool touch of glass against her hand, and turned to take it from him.

He stood next to her and they sipped while watching the city move toward slumber for the night. At times, she could feel his stare on her in the glass. Whenever she tried to catch him, he would take another sip to hide his eyes.

She wasn't sure when she knew that something was wrong. At first it was nothing, a little blurring around the edges of her vision, a slight dizziness when she went to sit down. Perhaps the wine was hitting her harder than she’d imagined. She shouldn't have skipped lunch to attend that talk. On the other hand, she thought, perhaps she was just dehydrated. She took the last sip of crisp pinot grigio in the stemmed glass. It was the last thing she remembered.

Snippet:

Anwen moved to stand, arms down at her sides as she stared ahead, ignoring his reaching hand. “I can see the trees,” she continued. “And the particles that make them. They're the same. The same as the ones that make up you and me. Like small planets circling miniature suns. I can see the smallest details.” Her eyes widened in awe. “It’s beautiful.”

Tyler stepped forward to stand beside her. Sometimes the plant had allowed such vision, but the cost was usually high. More than a handful with similar sight had gone blind from the experience. That was why it was better for mortals to “hear” everything rather than see it. He only hoped there would be no such resulting repercussions in this instance.

Concentrating, Tyler tried to reach out to the part of his soul that resided within hers. His soul gaze was met with an aura of brilliant golden light, entwined with hints of red and blue. Silver flashed throughout, like a protective cage made of lightning. It seemed to dare anyone to try and displace it.

Anwen turned towards Tyler. The morning sunlight glinted off her auburn hair like little sparks of fire. She closed her eyes and leaned into him, her lips meeting his. Both their hearts thumped like drums in perfect harmony. Despite that, Tyler stood frozen in shock. The kiss was brief but oh so sweet as she pulled away. “You taste like summer,” she observed with a wistful sigh.

Tyler felt rooted to the ground, his eyes wide at her rather unexpected advance. “Um,” he managed, looking at her. “Thank you?” Her eyes had returned to their normal coloring, he noticed. That was a good sign. Perhaps she wouldn’t go blind after all.

The Wingman by David Pepper

Jack Sharpe, Book 2
Political Thriller
Date Published:  February 2018
Publisher: St. Helena Press

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

In The Wingman, veteran Midwestern reporter Jack Sharpe has made it big thanks to the deep-rooted voter-fraud conspiracy he uncovered in The People’s House (the first of the series). At his new perch at Republic, one of America’s flashiest and fastest growing news networks, life is good—until it’s not. Following his beat reporter’s gut, he catches a whiff something rotten is taking place in the Democratic Presidential primary, and ultimately discovers an elaborate scheme to put a corrupt and dangerous politician in the nation’s highest office by any means necessary. Dark money, drone technology, paramilitary government contractors, neglected veterans, kompromat—we see these issues in the news every day. But in The Wingman David Pepper shows that if shadowy entities with enough incentive and resources were to connect and exploit these issues, the American people would be largely powerless to stop them. Jack must risk his life and reputation to get to the bottom of the story before the disturbing plot he and his team have uncovered becomes reality.

Early Praise for The Wingman:

“A labyrinthine political thriller that details a plot to steal the American presidency. …Energetically paced…A cinematic and dramatic story full of delightful twists.” —Kirkus Reviews

“Another tour de force…Like The People’s House, I loved this book.  Pepper is a phenomenal writer, with great dialogue, intricate plot, subplots, and characters.  And with his unique perch, Pepper deftly wraps the real issues and frustrations of modern-day politics into captivating story lines.  I can hardly wait for the next one.” —Jennifer Granholm, former Governor, Michigan

“Pepper does it again! Believable and entertaining—just like the real news these days. What’s fake and what’s real?” —Jack Markell, former Governor, Delaware

“The Wingman by David Pepper takes readers on a rollicking ride…There are the kinds of surprises readers long for and characters they will remember long after the last page is turned.

Well-researched and beautifully crafted, The Wingman is a thrilling read, a story that brilliantly depicts the political atmosphere leading up to the primaries….The characters are superbly conceived and developed to appear like people in real life….David Pepper is a master storyteller.…”

The Wingman by David Pepper is an exceptional political thriller…The book is well-written, interesting and, above all, suspenseful, and is therefore recommended to any reader, not just fans of political thrillers.”   —Readers’ Favorites, Reviews

Other Books in the Jack Sharpe Series:

The People's House
Jack Sharpe, Book 1
Publisher: St. Helena Press
Release Date: October 2017

It doesn't take long to discover why the Wall Street Journal crowned "The People's House" the "sleeper for political thriller of the year," or why a former Governor said she almost missed her connecting flight because she couldn't put it down.

Youngstown political reporter Jack Sharpe is logging time at the tail end of a disappointing career -- jaded about politics and stung by personal hard knocks in a struggling part of Ohio. But after an odd election result in the Ohio Congressional district he covers, Sharpe stumbles across voting irregularities that spur him to dig deeper. The story takes him far beyond his corner of Ohio as he discovers an international plot that strikes at the heart of American democracy. His reporting leads to a showdown with a philandering Congressman and Presidential contender, and an eccentric but deadly Russian mogul. In order to save himself and the country, Sharpe must rekindle his old fire to navigate a treacherous journey through danger, betrayal, and atonement.

And yes, it was all written before eerily similar events occurred in the 2016 election.

Excerpt

That’s when I noticed. With the cameras still pulled back to the wider shot, and the studio audience sitting well behind me, my guess was that I was the only one seeing it.

Bravo’s eyes. His dark brown eyes.

They widened, then darted ever so slightly.

Left.

Right.

Then he looked at me. Directly. Impatiently. In a way no one else could have seen.

He was eager to move on. Desperate to move on.

His words may have been moving, his delivery powerful. But those eyes told the real story—they always did. As my high school coach had drilled into me as a young quarterback, “It’s all about your eyes, Jack. The best players are watching your eyes, and if you’re not careful, they’ll betray you every time.” I’d long ago learned that Coach’s lesson applied way beyond football. A man could mouth whatever words he wanted, lie or tell the truth. He could smile or frown, gesture wildly or sit perfectly still. But his eyes told the real story. If he wasn’t careful, and if you paid attention, the eyes told all.

Now, Bravo’s eyes signaled that something was off. Discomfort, at a time when discomfort made no sense. Maybe it was a painful memory. Or maybe something about the story was not quite right. Or maybe there was more to it. Whatever it was, Bravo wanted to change topics.

And since he had saved my debut, I returned the favor, moving onto the final question of the night. But because of those eyes, I also jotted down a simple reminder on the notepad in front of me: “Check out Bravo war story.”

The Haunting of Dove Cote House by Rachel Jordan

Paranormal
Date Published: 16th February 2018

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Following the death of her father Cat Fletcher returns to the family home where she lived until she was 18.

But Cat's memories of the past are blurry, despite dreaming regularly about Dove Cote House.

And her home coming is far from perfect, when in the true meaning of the expression, the past comes back to haunt you, does just that.

 Excerpt

“Can you tell me about the house’s history?”

Cat shook her head. “Very little I’m afraid. Only how it got its name and its reputation for being haunted.

It’s something Rob and I had talked about researching.

My parents never got round to doing it for fear of what others would say or think. They felt that it was easier to just let it go.

I had hoped to do it tomorrow, but with my husband arriving it doesn’t seem feasible now.”

“You know Cat it might be better to go to Winford Library”, Rob said.

“They have fantastic research facilities now and there is always the Museum too.”

“Well perhaps we can do that on Saturday,” James said, before adding “It’s something any number of us can do as many hands make light work. But if we can’t all go it doesn’t matter.”

Cat let out a deep sigh. “I’ll be honest I don’t know how Phil is going to react to this. Although he was good enough to tell me about the potential story, and he got suspended because of his actions. Don’t worry I’ll be there on Saturday no matter what. This is my house, where all these things have and still are happening, and I’m going to get to the bottom of it once and for all.”

“That’s the spirit if you’ll forgive my pun. Now one other thing that crossed my mind,” James said. “I’m assuming that once you have completed the research you’ll then start investigating and dealing with the spirit yourself. “

Cat nodded.

“You have some fantastic items to help you with that Cat.”

“Thanks, but it’s all down to Rob. Without his help I wouldn’t have known where to start.”

“Which reminds me,” Rob said. “Any problems if I bring my equipment over, and store it with yours?”

“None what so ever, and if you want to leave it here permanently feel free to do so.”

“Well in that case I’ll go and get it tomorrow. Fancy coming with me James? You can meet my folks.”

Cat grinned to herself as it was obvious neither man felt comfortable being around when Phil arrived.

“Good idea. I’d like to meet them very much.”

“Have you ever done a paranormal investigation like this before? “

“Yes, in fact I have on more than one occasion. I’ve been called in by investigators just in case they were dealing with something demonic.

The Church never approved when I did. I guess that all went against me in the end, but I stand by what I did and always will.

Now back to what I wanted to ask you.

Are we only dealing with the woman here, or is it both spirits? If you are happy to let the child continue residing here you can do so.”

“She’s never caused any trouble, and I guess she has become part of my life. I’m more than happy to let her stay.”

The words had hardly left Cat’s mouth, when every door in the house started opening and slamming uncontrollably.

“Okay,” Cat said loudly. “I don’t think that’s the answer I was meant to give.”

As the doors kept opening and closing, Cat, Rob and James looked on in horror as the table was dragged across the room, but more frighteningly as Cat’s books flew off the shelves and were flung at them by unseen hands. Then the curtains were pulled from their rails and cushions thrown about.

The unending banging of the doors had begun to make the house vibrate and Rob felt as if he was going to develop a violent headache because of the noise.

“For God’s sake stop this at once,” James’ clear voice shouted out.

The front door suddenly opened with a heavy thud: the bolts and locks ripped to pieces.

“Stop it please,” Cat screamed. “In the name of God just stop it.”

All activity in the house suddenly stopped as quickly as it had begun, and to Cat it felt as if she would hear a pin drop any moment it had gone so quiet.

Her eyes opened wide as she saw a dark form looming in the doorway, which slowly turned into the woman.

“Oh this isn’t good.”

James and Rob turned to look at Cat and then followed her gaze.

The spirit, which neither had seen until that moment, was drawing closer to them by the second.

The woman stood in front of James. “Get out of this house, you vile exorcist.”

The next second she was in front of Rob. Her movement that quick no one had seen it. “I’ll warn you a second time. You are to leave.”

Cat stood up tall as the spirit moved in front of her. She was staring at Cat intently, and for a moment, Cat was afraid her legs were going to give out under her. Instead she pulled herself together and stared back at the woman.

“Anything you want to say to me? Or is it only my friend’s you feel like threatening today?”

The woman raised one of her hands in Cat’s direction. “You are the biggest traitor of them all. You openly plan to get rid of me. How could you do that? How can you treat your mother this way?”

She pushed her hand towards Cat, and to everyone’s shock Cat was thrown backward violently, her head narrowly missing hitting against the window ledge.

With a high pitch shriek the spirit disappeared.

Rob and James ran to Cat to help her.

“I’m all right. Nothing feels broken and I’m lucky I didn’t bang my head.”

As she stood with the support of the others, Cat saw Phil standing in the doorway, shock registered on his face.

“Cat, in God’s name what just happened? This place looks like a bomb’s hit it!”

About the Author

Hi there. My name is Rachel Jordan

Two things I have loved from the time I was small are the paranormal and writing.

I like nothing more then curling up with a ghost story that keeps you wondering what will happen next. Or failing that watching one of my favorite paranormal films.

I did some freelance journalism many years ago, but I adore sitting down and writing stories.

Is it any wonder that I have decided to combine the two things I love the most?

"The Haunting of Dove Cote House", is my debut novel

I live in the United Kingdom.
