Author Interview with Seelie Kay

About the Book:

Lady Annabelle Trask is missing. Unfortunately, MISix doesn’t know if they’re looking for a woman, a cow, or something in between!

Is it real or is it fantasy? That’s the question MISix Agent Mathilda Honoria Spencer struggles with on her latest assignment. Tasked with discovering the whereabouts of Lady Annabelle Trask, Tillie is thrust into the world of Hucows and other human animals. It’s a world that raises serious questions about sexual fetishes, intentional physical enhancements, and even pornography, but in the end, Tillie has only one mission—to rescue and return Lady Annabelle to the Queen. However, as she and her partner, Agent Abdul Ali, attempt to find Lady Annabelle and keep her out of the clutches of terrorists bent on destroying the monarchy, they must also wrestle with their feelings for each other. Can they draw the line between their duty to the Crown and their relationship with one another? Or must they embark on separate paths to continue to serve the Queen?

Author Interview

When did you decide to become a writer?

I never actually decided to become a writer. Writing just comes easily. It has always been my preferred mode of communication. I would rather write a letter than make a phone call. I did get undergraduate and graduate degrees in journalism, but that was a qualification for the type of job I was interested in.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

I have no definite ambitions. Sure, I would like to write a bestseller, but with the number of books written each year, that’s not a practical expectation—no matter how good I think my books are. I write because I love to write. The minute writing fails to bring me joy, I will stop.

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

Tillie Spencer is a MI6. She is impulsive, and sometimes, makes a difficult situation worse, but she is totally committed to the Queen. In the past, she has crossed swords with American intelligence agents, and to avoid termination, has agreed to help them out when necessary. The first time she was brought in, she was sent to a colony at the bottom of the sea as part of an inmate work program. (She also went through a fake arrest and wound up in prison. See the details in my book, “Martimus.”) Despite all of that, she is smart, sassy, and sexy. She is a good agent, just a little too competitive!

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?

After an accident, I am currently relearning to walk, so my mornings are filled with physical therapy. I write when I can find a block of time to concentrate, mostly in the afternoon.

Where do the ideas come from?

I am inspired by everyone and everything. A conversation, a trip to the grocery store, a news story, watching a stranger with their kids, a football game… I never know what will spark a story idea. I just pay attention and take notes.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?

I am a total pantser. When I have an idea for a story, I sit down and write until I am finished. I didn’t do well with outlines in school. I still don’t have the patience for one now. I just let the words flow.

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

I have never had writer’s block. I have had brain “farts,” what my family calls “senioritis.” Usually, those are the sign I need to take a break. I simply turn off the computer and do something else—cook or bake, work in my garden, turn on a movie, go shopping. It’s important to keep the brain stimulated and not get locked into a routine.

What can we expect from you down the line?

I am working on two series right now, Royals Gone Rogue, and Donovan Trait. I am the middle of Book 2 in the Donovan Trait series, “Ye Gods! The Law is an Ass!” Attorney Donovan Trait (a vampire by night) and his human turned vampire wife, Shirley, are on the run from the Vampire Coalition. As part of their marital agreement, Shirley must avoid conception. (Vamps have a problem with vampires who are part human.) When she discovers she is pregnant, the Coalition gets nasty and they are forced to flee to a mysterious island populated by vampire nuns. I don’t know the ending yet because I am still writing! I am also collecting information for the next book in my Royals Gone Rogue series. I do a lot of research before I start a book. I am also starting to collect ideas for my holiday book, which is due in June.

Thanks for having me!
