GENES TO DIE FOR—AND SOMEONE DOES…

When Jessica James wakes up half naked behind a dumpster in downtown Chicago, she thinks at first the hot intern feeding her Fiery Mule Slammers slipped her a Mickey. But after a pattern of similar incidents around Northwestern Research Hospital, Jessica realizes she wasn't raped, she was robbed. Robbed of something as valuable as life itself. Hunting for the predator drugging and dumping Ivy League co-eds, Jessica discovers secrets about her own identity that force her to rethink her past. The solution to the mystery lies in the cowgirl philosopher's boot-cut genes.

The "dumpster girls" are all top of their class, attractive college girls, who are drugged and dropped unconscious behind dumpsters. The police are baffled. But the perp doesn’t stop there—one of his victims turns up dead. Armed with her quick wit and cowgirl grit, Jessica takes it on herself to solve the bewildering medical mystery and save herself and her friends… before they become the next grisly victims.

At Jesse’s beck and call is her longtime confidante Jack Grove, an easy-going stoner and brilliant third-year medical student in abnormal psychiatry, who has a secret crush on her. But while Jack is trying to understand the criminal mind, his classmate and rival, Max White, is trying to eliminate it through genetic engineering. Competing for Jessica's attention, Jack and Max become the primary suspects. Meanwhile, Max has a secret of his own: he’s aiding a prominent Chicago woman in her fertility woes. And just for good measure, there’s a blackmailer afoot.

Grittier than its predecessors, and far more haunting, Kelly Oliver’s third page-turning Jessica James adventure blends a smartly-funny and delightfully complex murder mystery with a touch of medical thriller, in which Jessica and Jack battle biological crimes at the hands of a unique—and menacing—thief.

Royal twins ripped apart at birth become reluctant champions of good and evil.

Kylie, a teenage science geek, has no faith in people. Instead, she relies on what she trusts the most, the facts––what she can see, touch, and hear but never feel. With enough pain to deal with in her own world, she is thrust into another––a kingdom at war whose strange inhabitants fear one thing the most––the return of the dragon.  All of this is illogical to Kylie, but even more so, when she discovers she belongs there.

Her brother, Prince Jarlon, journeys to kill the dragon who has laid waste to his kingdom.  His only hope for destroying the beast is help from his sister, whom he has never met. Will their paths cross before the beast’s malevolence infects Kylie and turns her into his creature or will Jarlon have to destroy her, too?

Advance Praise

“A heartwarming fantasy adventure featuring winning characters.” – Kirkus Review

Excerpt

A deafening screech sounded. Jarlon’s limbs vibrated from the piercing cry of a teledicthus. The dragon’s minions.

The twenty-foot-high shelves rumbled, and books rained down. Screams came from outside the library door. “Jarlon you must escape,” the king commanded. “Go into the forest and find the Lady of the Eyes. I need you safe. Go.”

The library doors flew open. A teledicthus, flapping large leather wings and screeching its horrible wail, flew into the room. The monster’s red face featured a mouth that was more like a barracuda than that of a bird. Its lower jaw was longer than the top, and both were lined with a double row of razor-sharp teeth. The creature’s large, black eyes darted about, then settled directly on the prince.

The master of arms pushed Jarlon toward the doorway, but the giant bird swooped closer. The soldier lifted his sword.

Too late.

The teledicthus swiped. Blood sprayed from the soldier’s shoulder, and he fell. The bird screamed in triumph and flew upward, preparing to attack again.

Jarlon leapt to the soldier’s aid. Using a sleeve of his waistcoat, he made a tourniquet by tying it around the man’s arm to stop the bleeding.

The Sword of Legends in his hand, the king yelled to Jarlon to run and hide.

Jarlon looked up and saw the glistening teeth of the giant bird come closer. Blood covered the bottom double row. The beast then closed its mouth, and the blood vanished. The creature dove toward him.

Unsheathing his sword, Jarlon waited for his moment to strike. The wind from the teledicthus’ wings whisked across his cheek and a touch of saliva brushed his arm. He swung his saber at the bird’s neck.

The teledicthus dropped in midair to dodge the blade. Still, the bird did not avoid the sharp blow to the back of his head as Jarlon hit downward.

“Maglot!” he swore. He hit the bird squarely but with the flat side of his sword. The sharp end had failed to pierce the beast’s skin.

The teledicthus flew up and out of reach. A second screeching bird swooped into the room, and the two circled their prey, their sights set on the king.

Jarlon ran toward his uncle. Everything slowed. His heart pounded.

The teledicthus dove closer and closer still.

With arm held upward, Jarlon placed his body and his sword in front of the king, waiting for the beasts’ jaws to tear into his flesh. Instead, his uncle shoved him to the floor, and Jarlon watched the king ram the Sword of Legends into one of the great birds.

The bird fell dead.

Jarlon pushed himself to his feet but not in time.

The other teledicthus sliced into his uncle’s chest, leaving a gash that exploded in red and ran down the king’s robe. His uncle was dead!

A scream, more primal than any teledicthus could make, erupted from Jarlon. “No!”

The giant bird flew back to the roof of the library.

Watching it circle above, Jarlon held his sword tightly and waited to die. Then the stone floor rumbled beneath him. Something grabbed his leg.

“Jarlon!”

Tryff! Where was he?

Jarlon looked down. A stone from the floor had been removed. He scrambled through the opening and dove into the darkness.

Raven's Eye by Adam Gowans

Ever since magic caused his mother's death, Ha-Neul, crown prince of Balhae, hates witches and the magic they wield. He has instituted harsh laws against all magic users.

Lisa is a young witch working undercover as a servant in his palace, hoping to gain freedom for her people. The last thing the two expect is to fall in love. But when Ha-Neul learns that Lisa is not only a witch, but the daughter of the Prince of Vires, land of witches, he banishes her. Distracted by heartbreak, he is caught off-guard by a military coup.

In hiding and on the run, Ha-Neul swallows his pride and travels with his siblings to Vires, planning to beg Lisa's aid, only to learn that she has mysteriously vanished.

Now his only hope in reclaiming his kingdom and reuniting with Lisa lies in the remote Northern Mountains, a country no one has ever penetrated and rumored home of a powerful magic source. There, Ha-Neul learns that a being powerful beyond comprehension has been carefully guiding his destiny. But if Ha-Neul can't let go of his hatred of all things magic, and accept the new path offered to him, it will mean the destruction of his entire world.

Adam Gowans is the youngest of five Air Force brats, out of which his siblings have voted him the weirdest. He loves anything that deals with stories, including movies, novels, television dramas, music, video games, manga/manhwa, and webtoons.

In his mid-twenties, he lived and taught English in South Korea for four years before returning to the States to live, like many LDS authors, in Utah.

His first novel is On Angelic Wings, which has a planned sequel, but the sequel will be released after two other novels that are calling for his attention.

Excerpt:

Ha-Neul stood at the corral, watching as Ha-Na ran a horse through a course of jumps. Several of her other nain stood by, watching alongside the stable master. Lisa stood a little apart from the other nain for a few minutes before breaking away to go into the stables. Intrigued that she would leave, Ha-Neul excused himself from his entourage, leaving his horse’s reins in his chamsagwan’s hand, to follow her. He watched as she bypassed all the docile horses and walked to a stall where a white-and-black-spotted mare tramped restlessly. As she approached the horse, it quieted and waited for her. She stroked the horse’s nose a few times before encircling her hands about its neck and resting her cheek against its nose. Both let out a deep sigh.
“I thought she wasn’t broken,” he said.
The mare backed away, and Lisa bolted upright, turning to face him. Then the horse went back to irritably tramping around its stall, making him wish he hadn’t interrupted the moment.
“Wangseja-Mama.” She bowed. When she rose from the bow, her eyes flitted around to his shoulders, his arms, and his chest, which stood out more prominently in his riding gear. A light heat started to bloom in his chest until she looked back up at his face, her expression hardening more than it ever had in the few times he had seen her in Ha-Na’s or Su’s company.
“So the mare is tame?” he asked to be conversational and to try to dispel the awkwardness.
“No, Wangseja-Mama. As you can see, she is not.” Her voice was cooler than usual.
“But she let you touch her,” he pointed out with interest.
Lisa’s cool, focused look slipped and a wistful smile appeared. “We just understand each other.” Her smile disappeared as the coolness returned. “Those who want their freedom will fight harder the more you try to control them.” She turned to leave after a brief bow, but her words intrigued him even more, and he stopped her with his words.
“What do you mean exactly when you say ‘want’?”
She looked back at him, then turned to face him. “I mean precisely what I said.”
... “I wasn’t entirely sure for the past couple of weeks, but now I’m convinced. You hate me,” he searched her face, looking deep into her eyes.
Lisa laughed, but it held no warmth, no amusement. “Yes, it is difficult for me to conceal it when you are in front of me.”
“Why?” His voice was a little soft, and his chest felt cold.
“Because you’re a monster.” Lisa spoke in Haeche.
He never believed he could see her countenance sour as much as it did at that moment. She no longer hid the extent of her hate for him, and it terrified him. ...
“You call yourself human, yet you seek to totally dehumanize a group of people—no, not dehumanize them, but make them the lowest scum of the planet—untouchable, unworthy to converse with, something to be exterminated.”
“That’s not—”
“Really!” she laughed again. The stable was quiet. Fear hung thick in the air as fury radiated from her. “Where will you end your campaign against witches? When you have punished their supporters to the point they are too frightened to help? Once the witches have left their homeland? The one they have occupied far longer than your people occupied ancient Balhae? Please, tell me when it will end!”
His own anger surged, overcoming his fear of her hatred for him. “Those lands no longer belong to them.”
“It belongs to them, and they to it. Your claim is infinitesimal compared to theirs.”
“I am wangseja of the country!”
“You are wangseja only because the last dynasty set your gajok above theirs hundreds of years ago. You are one person—just like everyone else on Dunia—with the same potential for good or evil, and you choose evil disguised under the name of good.”
“Why do you care so much? You are nothing but a nain who wants to be a musuri!”
“I know you’ve seen my file, and I don’t care what you think of me because I know you will show no respect for me. Your view of what is human is skewed. All who live in the northern territories know it. You are a joke, Wangseja”—she spat his title with such venom he almost recoiled, even in the midst of his own fury—“among those people, and I will tell you this one thing.” She paused for the briefest of moments, her presence dominating everything around him. “The more you fight against Vires—against those witches—the more the other territories and those sympathetic with witches will rise against you.”
A sense of dread chilled his body. “You mean the northern Balhaens.”
“Yes.”
“And you are certain of this?” His anger simmered underneath the sheen of calm about the implication that the territory and the northern Balhaens in his employ might betray him.
“As certain as I stand in front of you.”

 Excerpt

(Excerpt from an unedited ARC)

Lifting the lid of the washer, Zoey just about gagged. Ryan had thrown his socks into the washer and closed the lid. She let the top slam close. “Ryan Taylor get your hairy ass in here!” She shouted not bothering to even temper her anger. The man had stepped on her last nerve.

“I cannot believe he would leave his stinky as shit socks, with the lid closed for me—”

Zoey had lifted the lid again. This time she breathed through her mouth to avoid the stench, and started to prepare the load for the wash cycle. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Ryan leaning against the door frame, arms crossed over his wide chest, biceps bulging. Everything about him screamed of the pleasures she denied herself. She may have been able to speak to him nicely if he had spoken. She may have been able to control herself if he had offered to help. She may not have added magik to the socks she drew out of the washer, balled up and tossed at Ryan if...if he had not grinned at her and snorted.

“Wash your own damn socks, wolf. I am not your maid. I am your wife and I have important matters to deal with such as how to keep the Council at bay, fight an evil witch and kill an immortal son of a bitch. Oh yeah, not one but two immortals thanks to you and your band of merry men, fuck you very much.” Yes, I would like to have you fuck me very much.

Zoey stepped to the side and ushered Ryan towards the washer. “What? Is this task beneath the high and mighty Ryan Alpha Wolf Taylor?”

Without a word Ryan walked to the washer, added more white clothes to his socks, the detergent and softener all while keeping the smile on his face. Zoey took a quick step back when the washer started but found herself boxed in between her hot husband and the dryer. Her mouth went dry and her pulse jumped to fight or flight speeds at his nearness. While her body wanted him to lift her up onto the machine and strip her down, her mind still ruled. Nipples reaching for his attention, they both knew she was wet and ready. Her scent would give her away. It was all she could do not to wrap her legs around his waist. Where was her B.O.B. when she needed it? Oh yeah, Ryan made her throw them all out saying he was all she was ever going to need. Well she needed something long, thick and very hard now and he wasn’t available. Zoey turned her head to the side, her hand pressed against Ryan’s unmoving pecs as his nose grazed her neck coming up within a hair's breadth from her lips.

“It’ll all be April fresh in thirty, Darlin’, be back then. Time enough to save the world?”

A growl filled the laundry room, but it wasn’t from the wolf. Zoey growled at the retreating back of the big bad wolf when he tugged a lock of her hair and winked at her all with that damnable smile on his face.

“I am going to kick your ass, Ryan, and save the world in thirty minutes,” she retorted before heading outside to pace. She had plans to make and put into place besides worrying about whether or not the wolf would ever truly apologize.
