Tasked with discovering the whereabouts of Lady Annabelle Trask, Tillie is thrust into the world of Hucows and other human animals. It’s a world that raises serious questions about sexual fetishes, intentional physical enhancements, and even pornography, but in the end, Tillie has only one mission—to rescue and return Lady Annabelle to the Queen. However, as she and her partner, Agent Abdul Ali, attempt to find Lady Annabelle and keep her out of the clutches of terrorists bent on destroying the monarchy, they must also wrestle with their feelings for each other. Author Interview

When did you decide to become a writer?

I never actually decided to become a writer. Writing just comes easily. It has always been my preferred mode of communication. I would rather write a letter than make a phone call. I did get undergraduate and graduate degrees in journalism, but that was a qualification for the type of job I was interested in.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

I have no definite ambitions. Sure, I would like to write a bestseller, but with the number of books written each year, that’s not a practical expectation—no matter how good I think my books are. I write because I love to write. The minute writing fails to bring me joy, I will stop.

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

Tillie Spencer is a MI6. She is impulsive, and sometimes, makes a difficult situation worse, but she is totally committed to the Queen. In the past, she has crossed swords with American intelligence agents, and to avoid termination, has agreed to help them out when necessary. The first time she was brought in, she was sent to a colony at the bottom of the sea as part of an inmate work program. (She also went through a fake arrest and wound up in prison. See the details in my book, “Martimus.”) Despite all of that, she is smart, sassy, and sexy. She is a good agent, just a little too competitive!

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?

After an accident, I am currently relearning to walk, so my mornings are filled with physical therapy. I write when I can find a block of time to concentrate, mostly in the afternoon.

Where do the ideas come from?

I am inspired by everyone and everything. A conversation, a trip to the grocery store, a news story, watching a stranger with their kids, a football game… I never know what will spark a story idea. I just pay attention and take notes.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?

I am a total pantser. When I have an idea for a story, I sit down and write until I am finished. I didn’t do well with outlines in school. I still don’t have the patience for one now. I just let the words flow.

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

I have never had writer’s block. I have had brain “farts,” what my family calls “senioritis.” Usually, those are the sign I need to take a break. I simply turn off the computer and do something else—cook or bake, work in my garden, turn on a movie, go shopping. It’s important to keep the brain stimulated and not get locked into a routine.

What can we expect from you down the line?

I am working on two series right now, Royals Gone Rogue, and Donovan Trait. I am the middle of Book 2 in the Donovan Trait series, “Ye Gods! The Law is an Ass!” Attorney Donovan Trait (a vampire by night) and his human turned vampire wife, Shirley, are on the run from the Vampire Coalition. As part of their marital agreement, Shirley must avoid conception. (Vamps have a problem with vampires who are part human.) When she discovers she is pregnant, the Coalition gets nasty and they are forced to flee to a mysterious island populated by vampire nuns. I don’t know the ending yet because I am still writing! I am also collecting information for the next book in my Royals Gone Rogue series. I do a lot of research before I start a book. I am also starting to collect ideas for my holiday book, which is due in June.

Thanks for having me!

Author Interview

When did you decide to be a writer?

I decided to become a writer when I was six years old. I just knew I wouldn’t be happy doing anything else.

What are the ambitions of your writing career?

I want to tell more stories that belong to children and young adults. The stories I wrote with my characters in their twenties was something that a lot of authors do. Hence, I decided I want to write stories where Indian kids see themselves represented! I didn’t have it when I was growing up – so I work every day, with every single story to bring about that change.

Give us insight into your main character. And what does he do that is special?

My character in this novel is a cat called Pippo. Pippo is the representation of my first cat, who had just turned up on my doorstep and forced my family to adopt him. In this story, he shares a very special bond with his mini owner aka Mia. He makes it his life’s mission to protect her from harm. Cats are famously known for their selfish, uncaring nature. What Pippo does in this story – and did in real life too – is to be there for Mia, even when she pushes everyone away. To me, that’s really special.

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?

My day job is from 10.30am to 7.30pm. I usually write post-dinner – from 10.30pm until I am limp all over – I write during the weekdays. And Fridays are my favorite. I can stay up all night writing on those days, you know? But yes. I have made it a habit to sit down and write for one hour every day. No matter what time. That’s a discipline I have made myself follow over the years of choosing to be a writer.

Where does the idea come from?

From inspired thoughts, I guess. I find ideas everywhere. Take this book, for example, my cat was my inspiration for it. I think ideas are everywhere. We just need to be open to the fact that an idea can hit you out of nowhere and suddenly you have this story that you want to tell the world. That’s what I feel.

Do you work on the outline or plot or you prefer to see where an idea takes you?

I started outlining my work from my second novel onwards – since I found out that I had written myself in several plot holes with the first book. I had started out as a writer who liked to see where the idea took me. It’s a good thing to do when you’re just starting out, I think. But eventually, you need to have meticulous plans to ensure you don’t have plot holes in your story.

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writers' blocks?

Listen to music. Write something else. Do something else. Skip ahead and write the next scene. You can always come back to the scene you’re stuck with later. Jack London once said somedays you have to go after inspiration with a club. He wasn’t wrong. While writer’s block is a very real thing – don’t let it become the reason you’re not writing.

What can we expect from you down the line?

More stories for children and young adults. Hopefully, stories that truly connect with the younger readers and address issues that need to speak about. More stories set in my old worlds….and a much-awaited and requested sequel for my best-loved book.

Author Interview

Tell us something about yourself, your life.

I grew up mostly in San Diego, California but since my dad was in the US Navy, I also lived in Japan and Guam for a time. I went to college in San Francisco where I earned my degree in English and later became a Radiologist.

Seven years ago, I suffered a stroke that severely limited the use of my right arm and right leg. I can walk, albeit slowly, and do need to use a cane at times. But I have to do everything one-handed, including write.

What inspires you to write?

I’ve always loved stories. Whether it’s a book, movie, or play, I love it. But growing up, there weren’t many stories about characters that looked like me or told stories about my heritage.

When I was in college, I took a class that discussed Filipino books and authors. It was great to read those stories and learn about their experiences. Everyone’s got a story. So I decided to tell my own.

How did you come up with the idea for your current story?

I came up with my story when I was still in high school. It started as a diary where I’d just write about my day and what was going with me at the time. It was just a way for me to get my thoughts out of my head. And then, I thought those events would make a good book one day.

Years later, through college, marriage, raising a son, and I still felt it could be a good book and always wanted to revisit it. So here we are.

Are there some stories tucked away in some drawer that was written before and never saw the light of the day?

Before I started this series, I had a project that I started and never finished. I got to a point where the story turned and I didn’t know where to take it. Also, the idea for my current series gnawed at the back of my mind which made it easy to abandon it for now. A few of those elements did make it in my book.

What is your favorite scene in the book? Why?

For the first book, it has to be Brandon and Ally’s first dance. I wanted to capture that excitement and uncertainty that we’ve all had about first love. And since they are such great friends, I wanted to emphasize the change in their dynamic.  How do you handle a romantic relationship with someone that you’ve been friends with your whole life?

My favorite scene in the second book is another one between Brandon and Ally when she is performing on stage. Brandon grows in that scene. He’s able to see the world through someone else’s eyes.

Did any of your characters inherit some of your own quirks?

Definitely. There’s a lot of me in Brandon, but bits of me in all the other characters too. My friends and I have been friends for decades now and we believe that a great friend will tease you to your face and praise you to others behind your back.

A lot of my interests are scattered throughout the series (sports, movies, rock music, photography) and I spread them among the different characters.

What is the best piece of advice you have received, as a writer, to date?

My college professor once told me to be true to my story. Whatever I wrote, I needed to make it in my own voice. I didn’t have to write like Hemingway, Shakespeare, Stephen King, or whoever. And it didn’t matter what it was about or if you’d read something like it before. What will make it unique is how you tell it.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Art inspires art. Read and learn from other writers. I still do this. Whenever I get stuck (and that’s often,) I read. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the same genre or completely different. I read to get a feel for the story. How did they describe things? How did they set the tone with dialogue and setting? What made me laugh or cry? When a book isn’t helping, I look at a painting, sculpture, or photograph for another source of inspiration.

What would be the Dream Cast for your book if it was to be turned into a movie?

I’ve always seen my book as a television series since that fits the expansive nature of my stories.

Since my book has Filipino and Filipino-American characters, I’d like the cast to reflect that. Asians in general aren’t a big part of American film and television, but I hope that is changing. There are signs of progress. If I had my way, I’d make sure that the cast had faces and skin tones similar to mine.

How do you spend your free time? Do you have a favorite place to go and unwind?

I loved writing at my neighborhood coffee shop. I’d take my son to school and park myself there until it was time to pick him up again. I got to know the staff and the owner very well. It was where I did the bulk of my writing.

These days, I unwind at home with a nice cup of coffee and bagel in the morning. My wife has been working from home so I tend to hide out in the master bedroom to read, write, or listen to podcasts. Once my wife is done, we all get together and hang out. Usually with something funny on YouTube...

My hobbies are cooking, reading, movies, and photography. I’m a huge foodie and love to try and cook new dishes.

Interview:
When did you decide to become a writer?
I never really decided that I will become a writer. It just happened over a period of 15 years.
The very first story I have ‘created’ was at a birthday party where I was assigned to look after a group of children. I narrated them a story that instantly flashed in my mind and everyone, including me was spelled bound.
After that, I started a blog and started writing stories for children. At the same time, random inspirations from the street of Hyderabad attracted me. There I began with compiling my observations which eventually turned out to be my first book – While I Was Waiting.
The response for the book encouraged me to write more… it instilled the confidence in me that I could write interesting stuff.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?
I just see myself as an author – not really viewing it as a career.
But, yes, I do have ambitions with no deadlines as such!
I want to write more. I want to experiment with different genre. Want to try non-fiction and write at least one book about philosophy/spirituality.

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?
One of the unique traits in my writing so far is that I really don’t believe in the protagonist-antagonist theory; I don’t brand anyone as good or bad. It is the story that drives the characters reactions to the given situations.
In my current book ‘The Treasure Syndicate’ the central character an Astrologer named ‘Acharya’. He is an old man with the knowledge of ages. He carries with him a distinct lineage that exists since the time Kaliyug set its foot on earth.
This character is special because:
Acharya ‘knows’ a lot of things, but he not ‘perfect’ at anything.
I wanted him to be that way, like every one of us, but he has the amount of perfection in him to readily accept his shortcomings. I mean, who does that now a days?

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
Oh Yes! I can write a book about it!
I was only particular about being lonely while writing, with a constant burning of incense sticks.
But the scope aggravated as I was researching on my book regarding the effects of planets and stars.
I have made it a routine to think about new ideas on a full moon night, while adoring the moon. – seems to be working for me.
Otherwise, I don’t have a set routing or time to write!! 😊

Where do the ideas come from?
To me, Ideas come from either thinking in a reverse direction, or thinking beyond what is obvious.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?
The idea drives me until I carve out an outline. Then, I leave it aside for days. This gives my mind the required time to be practical about what I am writing. Then, when I re-read my outline, and if I am still able to connect with it, I continue writing on the subject else, it stays like that – sure to be picked up at some point of time (may be as a part of a larger work)

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?
I experience writer’s block quiet often… but over the period, I’ve realized that it is more of an indication that this is not what I should be writing. A percent of books that are incomplete in my list are all due to this. I guess, the god in me wants me to complete what he thinks is best for me… 😊

What can we expect from you down the line?
More books! More from the Treasure Syndicate, some non-fiction, some philosophy and a lot of entertainment!!

About the Author:

For the mortal world, I pretend to be a Software Engineer who works hard (or hardly?) in the hours of a day. I am the guy next door, a hard core Harry Potter fan and a movie buff. I literally ‘live’ every movie, I have strong opinions about its content and I hate it when a movie based on an interesting concept is messed up for the sake of commercial value. I enjoy watching cartoon shows (doremon, dora and Choota Bheem) with my son. I never get bored of listen to the endless chatter of my wife. When I’m not writing, I make toys for children.
But beyond the boundaries of this ‘cholesterol rich’ coil, I am a rider of rapturous thoughts. I am a thinker, a philosopher, a seeker, a story-teller, a writer, a wanderer and every other thing that a thought can be. At times some of these figments fire out of my thoughtful bowl and command me to write, muse, create, recreate, destroy…EXPRESS!
Who Am I? I have been asking this question to myself since 33 years, and I got a different answer always. Sometimes I get confused and think, am I asking the right question to seek the correct answer? or may be that am I missing the  whole fantastic universal drama around me while I am busy finding an answer to an irrelevant question?
Does the answer even matter?

Interview:

Question: When did you decide to become a writer?
Answer: As I understand, almost all the authors are doing something more(apart from writing) to make a living. So an author/writer is not someone whose only entity is that he/she is a writer. Well, in my case the desire for writing sparked (I am an electrical engineer with a complete technical background) in early twenties when I devoured the short story of Guy De Maupassent, Tagore and O Henry. The surprise ending in their stories left me simply awestruck. I realized greatest stories can be spun from ordinary lives. I became a better observer (as I feel) and felt that I could voice my thoughts in words and thus the journey began.

Question: What are your ambitions for your writing career?
Answer: I l write with love; unless an idea overwhelms me usually I don’t write it. And when you write with total love, you want to be read. I am already financially comfortably off, hence no monetary ambition from writing.

Question: Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?
Answer: Look, I have written three novels. The first one, Life is always aimless…  is a love story and the protagonist dreams of becoming an author one day; a young man with all doubts and confusion in whom we all can find a glimpse of ours.
In the second novel, Paradise Lost & regained, the protagonist is a deer who narrates its life in first person singular. This novel is a grand flight of imagination, and I see my self-projection in that little deer.
And third novel, The Speaking Stone, has two protagonists, Shuvashini and Saikat, again both the characters are formed from people I met in real life hence they are very special to me. Besides, they also know that I took the liberty of using their characters to manufacture this large novel.

Question: Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
Answer: I usually prefer to write at night, chiefly post ten pm when there is an agreeable silence around.  During holidays, at times, I work during day, too. But again, night time is my favourite. Before getting into writing, I invariably note down the major events which will be the spine of basic storyline chronologically. It affords me to complete the writing faster.

Question: Where do the ideas come from?
Answer: I don’t know. I don’t think any sincere author can answer this question. All I have to do is keep my being open, and ideas pour in from all around, barely few of them I write and the rest remain with me. When you write keeping your readers in mind and the kind of stuff they love to read, and produce the same sorts of stuff, you can answer from you get the ideas, otherwise no author can answer it.

Question: Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?
Answer: Usually, I write a meticulous outline for without it, it is difficult to write a large novel. However, at times, the flow of events makes the story move this way or that.

Question: Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?
Answer: Give yourself time, let silence be your best friend for a while and eventually you will break the writer’s block and come up with a better way to take your writing project ahead.

Question: What can we expect from you down the line?
Answer: The first and foremost is that there will be no commonplace storyline. Whether it is mystery novel or a work on life it will be an extremely original work with lots of surprise element.

Interview
  1. When did you decide to become a writer?
I am not a writer as of now. I am just trying to find out a way of expressing myself in a continuous reflective mode by introspecting on the history of incremental change that is happening within me and in my relationship with the entire ecosystem around me everyday and every moment. I don't exactly know when I have started doing it as it happened quite naturally just like the process of one season coming and being replaced by either. However, in that process, there were also human induced climate change impacts which often delayed the onset of one seasonality:).

  1. What are your ambitions for your writing career?
I just want to continue expressing myself by breaking my fear at every stage of the next step by getting a deep clarity inside of the “Why” of a certain reflection, communication and expression. That’s it. Rest, will follow.

  1. Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?
One of the characters named is called - Shopno. He /She/Zhe does dream all the time and that is very special. These dreams are not always cosy dreams but Shapno takes the ride into those dreams and evolves being special every time.

  1. Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
I divide the entire day into - 2 hours of slices. In those time slices, writing for my research, current, future research projects, reading notes, for my classroom and teaching pedagogy, for my papers, my blogs, my writing practice, my music and also my book comes in along with homework notes about understanding my audience every time.  Once upon a time, in these time slices, there was also a film script writing process which for sometime now is in a halt.

  1. Where do the ideas come from?
I get reflections but not ideas exactly. I think through those reflections again and again till an idea is germinated. Reflections come from all around - from every animate and inanimate aspects of life if we are open and ready with a mind which is just like a blotting paper. When, exactly these reflections become an idea, i really can't say about that.

  1. Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?
I do structure plot, outline all the time and keep on changing it too all the time. My plots and outlines constantly talk to the process of conversion of reflection to an idea until finally something concrete is born. What, when and where that concretisation happens is always uncertain. I allow my instincts to decide when that final concretisation has happened to the process. But yes, there is a constant process and structure of interaction between my plots, outlines and my reflections and ideas.

  1. Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?
Don't think too much about it. Be your natural self and let yourself evolve through several other aspects of life which will automatically reduce the dreaded writer’s block. We don't need to overdo or over think about it, as it is a very natural aspect of life. We have to accept it and grow.

  1. What can we expect from you down the line?
I am currently working on a fiction project which deals with the evolution of social, economic and political inequalities, rise of the subaltern through hardship, politics of sexuality, gender, feminism, finance capitalism and a courtroom drama. The fiction project will touch upon all these issues by covering the larger macro- history of India and many developing countries in a plot centric way by intentionally experimenting with the forms of narration.
I am also working on the third book of the Lucy Series (Lucy and The Train: Tryst with Sustainability, Lucy Meets Artificial Intelligence) with Dr. Debashis Chakraborty who was my coauthor also in - “Lucy Meets Artificial Intelligence”.
