Deceitfully Yours by Andaleeb Wajid is the story of what happens when a fake relationship starts to feel very, very real.
Sanjana and Karthik just wanted their parents to stop talking marriage to them. So, they faked an engagement and now their parents are not talking marriage but planning a wedding instead. Three love stories, three oddball couples, one epic weekend in Goa…

Short Excerpt from Hatefully Yours by Alisha Kay

She was going to kill Karthik. He could at least have warned her that he had invited Manan to join them.
It was high time Karthik pulled his head out of his ass and accepted that he couldn’t make his best friends like each other by forcing them to spend time together.
Aditi sighed at the thought of yet another uncomfortable encounter where she tiptoed around Manan, while he scowled at her as if she was a mass murderer. She was so done with this crap. She’d catch up with Karthik some other time when this big galoot wasn’t around.
She stood up and tried to walk past Manan with her head held high. Only to be brought up short by the strange sound coming from his mouth.
She froze in fury and turned towards him slowly.
“Excuse me? Did you… did you just cluck at me?”
The corner of Manan’s mouth turned up lazily as he nodded.
“Like a chicken?” she clarified.
“Uh-huh. If the shoe fits,” he said with a shrug.
“What shoe?”
“You’re running away. Like a scared chicken,” he explained helpfully.
Aditi wanted to slam her purse into his smug face, but she remembered, just in time, that she did not believe in violence as a solution to any problem.”

Alisha Kay writes funny, exciting and steamy stories, with spunky heroines who can rescue themselves, and hot, woke heroes who find such independence irresistible.

She laughed, a bright sound in the dark night and Sid couldn’t stop himself anymore. He wanted to soak in the joy, the sheer light that beamed out of her. He leaned in close, closer than he should have but other than a slight widening of her eyes, Dani didn’t move. She just kept watching him, a small smile on those soft, lush lips.

“May I?” he whispered.

She nodded, her eyes gently closing in anticipation.

And Sid kissed her. Her lips met his in acceptance, in warmth, in sensation that drowned them both. He sank into the kiss, his arms going around her as she burrowed into him, one hand clutching his hair and pulling him closer.

He responded in kind until it felt like they were impossibly close, no space between them. Nothing in all his years of gadding about like a wandering tomcat had prepared him for this. For her.

And then a wave crashed over them, wetting them and bringing them out of their dreamlike haze.

Sid started to laugh even as he pulled a spluttering Dani to her feet. She leaned in close to him, shaking her wet hair like a little puppy. Droplets hit his face and his smile faded. One finger trailing her cheek, he captured her lips again.

Bliss. This was bliss.

Short Excerpt from Deceitfully Yours by Andaleeb Wajid

‘You’re scared of butterflies?’ he asked in a low voice that sent her pulse racing.
She nodded. The moment was intact. He continued to explore her skin lightly, making her hunger for more.
‘I’m terrified of them,’ she whispered.
‘How odd,’ he whispered back.
She wanted to tell him it wasn’t odd at all and that butterflies were just prettily coloured furry large insects that flew about and more people should be terrified of them. But she lost her train of thought as he gripped the back of her head gently and pulled her down.
Their lips were just a few breaths away from each other when he whispered.
‘Butterflies are beautiful. Like you.’
She wondered if he could feel her stomach flip at his words.
‘They’re scary,’ she said. ‘But I can be scary if I want to.’
He smiled at her words and then his hand pressed her head closer and their lips touched.

Read an excerpt:

Was anyone watching?

Keith McDonald sat at the computer and glanced around the oil platform’s rec room, but the dozen or so workers were engrossed in watching the final game of a Ping-Pong match. He hesitated,
then hovered his cursor over the Send button. Clenching his teeth, he sent the emails. Maybe it was nothing, but if anyone could decipher the recording, it was Reid Dixon.

The back of his neck prickled, and Keith looked around again. The room felt stifling even with the AC cooling it from the May heat. He jumped up and headed for the door. He exited and darted into the shadows as two men strolled past. One was his suspect.

Keith stood on a grating suspended three thousand feet over the water and strained to hear past the noise of machinery. The scent of the sea enveloped him, and the stars glimmered on the water surrounding the oil platform that had been his home for two years now.

“Scheduled for late May—”

A clanging bell drowned out the rest of the man’s words.

“Devastation—”

The other fragment of conversation pumped up Keith’s heart rate. Were they talking about the sabotage he feared, or was he reading more into the words than were there? He couldn’t believe someone could be callous enough to sabotage the oil platform and destroy the coast on purpose. He’d seen firsthand the devastating effects from the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe. And what about the people living on the platform? Deepwater Horizon had killed eleven people and injured another seventeen.

He had to sound a warning and stop this, but he had no real evidence. If Reid Dixon blew him off, who would even listen? Maybe Homeland Security would pay attention, but who did he even call there? He could tell them about the pictures threatening Bonnie, but what did that prove? They might just say she had a stalker and he was chasing shadows.

He couldn’t say they were wrong.

He sidled along the railing, and the breeze lifted his hair. A boat bobbed in the waves far below, and in the moonlight, he spotted a diver aboard. Must be night diving the artificial reef created by the concrete supports below the platform. He’d done a bit of it himself over the years.

For an instant he wished he were gliding carefree through the waves without this crushing weight of conscience on his shoulders. When he was sixteen, life was so simple. School, girls, football, and good times. He’d gone to work at the platform when he was nineteen, after he’d decided college wasn’t for him.

It had been a safe place, a good place to work with fun companions and interesting work.

Until a few weeks ago when everything turned sinister and strange. He’d wanted to uncover more before he reported it, but every second he delayed could mean a stronger chance of an attack.

If an attack was coming. He still wasn’t sure, and he wanted a name or to identify the organization behind the threat. If there was a threat. Waffling back and forth had held him in place. Was this real, or was he reading something dangerous into something innocent?

Though he didn’t think he was overreacting.

He turned to head to his quarters. A bulky figure rushed him from the shadows and plowed into his chest, driving him back against the railing. The man grabbed Keith’s legs and tried to tip him over the edge.

Cats are inquisitive but hate to admit it. - Mason Cooley

Chapter Five: The Witch

Pippo had often heard his mini owner recall old times when she and her friend, Shekhar, had dared each other to go to their house’s backyard. She had laughed about the idea that it was probably haunted because she knew for a fact it couldn’t be. He knew otherwise now. Only, it wasn’t haunted by spooky spirits. It was haunted instead by a witch. The Witch all the animals seemed to be scared of.

“So the backyard, is haunted?” Pippo said in a breath, “Only by…her?”

“Has Brown and White finally answered my summons?” asked the Witch, now coming into focus.

She looked exactly like Pippo had seen in the television shows Mia would watch. She was clad from head to foot in black. Even her nails had been painted in black. Only, she was exceptionally pretty, almost as though her beauty was bewitching. And on her shoulder was perched, Mr.Crow.

“She means you, fluffy head,” said Brown, swatting Pippo lightly on the head.

“My name is PippoBasu Roy,” growled Pippo, angrily at Brown. He licked his left paw and rubbed the same against his ears.

“Oh, he’s a keeper,” hooted Brown, “Since when do cats have surnames?” “Enough!” thundered the Witch, “I will not have any of that in my courtroom.”

“Courtroom,” whispered Pippo in shock. Recovering a little he spat, “Who are you kidding, lady? This is my mini owner’s backyard.”

“Mini owner!” thundered the Witch, narrowing her eyes at the new member of her little animal kingdom, “Do you not know you belong to me now?”

“I belong to no one,” Pippo snarled at her, “If anything – mini owner belongs to me!”

“Indeed she does,” laughed the Witch, “Tell me, if I were to kill you now in cold blood, would she come and stop me?”

She inched nearer to Pippo, who stood his ground. He growled, baring his teeth, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike.

“Do you really think biting me is going to get you anywhere, you obnoxious ball of fur?” asked the Witch, “I am a witch, damn it.”

“Now,” said Pippo, not taking his eyes off her for a second, “Do you have a name, Miss Witch? Or should I just keep calling you Witch?”

“Oh, now he’s done it,” said Brown, hooting with laughter.

He got smacked on the head by White Little almost immediately, “Don’t laugh. Don’t you see how serious this could get?”

Book Excerpt from Ready For The World: Superstar

The rat-a-tat-tat of my typewriter was as soothing as waves crashing on the beach. Every keystroke meant another letter, word, or sentence on the page. Every whoosh of the rollers meant another layer added to what I called The Leaning Tower of Paper. Hey, its a working title. My ideas flowed so fast I shouldve had a radar gun on me. I was in, what athletes like to call, The Zone.

It was in early January 1987 when I realized that it was my destiny to be a writer. I was good at it, I liked doing it, and when I wasnt writing, I found myself thinking about it. Taking hold of your destiny when youre six months shy of your sixteenth birthday is no easy task. For one thing, you have school five days a week with homework assignments every night. If you play a sport, belong in a club, or play an instrument, then that takes up more of your time. When you finally do get home, your Mom and Dad hand you a long list of chores. Its not like when youre an adult and you have way more time to fulfill your destiny. Its way harder when youre a teenager.

The rain fell like Niagara Falls outside. Jacob worried that at any minute the giant window would shatter and send shards all over his room. The leaves on the giant oak tree in his yard that hadnt fallen in the downpour blew away in the howling wind. His unlucky neighbors caught in the rainstorm scurried for shelter. Their makeshift umbrellas of magazines and newspapers dissolved away in their hands. Jacobs ears perked up as thunder echoed in the distance.

Jacob imagined Lindsays car pulling up to her darkened driveway. He would grab his coat and step outside. Hed hurdle the chain-link fence surrounding his yard. Lindsay would be there waiting for him, flashing that brilliant smile of hers that he knew so well. He imagined walking up to her, standing face to face, with each of them feeling the heat of each others breath…

Of course, that was when my phone rang and I dropped out of The Zone. Normally, I would have pulled the phone out of the wall. But after a quick glance at the clock, I picked up the receiver before the first ring even finished. Right on time,I said.

Howd you know it was me?Ally asked.

Because you are nothing if not punctual.

Am I that predictable?

I prefer to say reliable,I said. It makes you sound more put together.

Ally and I talked on the phone every night at the same time since she left for vacation. Our, I guess Id call it a relationship, had moved along great. Better than great. We werent having those awkward pauses and silences like other people did. We talked like we always did: about the Lakers, about neither of us being ready to go back to school, and about life.

She cleared her throat. Hows the book coming along?

I banged my elbow against the typewriter and the Zkey popped off. Hold on,I said as I grabbed the Super Glue. Im listening, I swear.

You sound busy,she said.

I held the phone with my shoulder and tried not to glue it there. No, no. Tell me about your vacation. Hows the weather? Did you go skiing?

Cold, she said. And no, Im not up for it.

Why? Did you break your leg or something?I laughed. When she was silent on her end, I tossed the glue down. Oh God, did you break your leg or something?

Ally let out a soft chuckle. No, Im packing for home.

Cutting the trip short?

My dad has some things to do here and Vince wanted to get a little more skiing in,she said. Itll just be me.

A drop of sweat fell onto my glasses. So, youre coming home...by yourself?

Uh-huh.

I cleared my throat. Um...when?

Wednesday,she said.

I dug through my hamper for my best dress shirt and saw the giant smear of mustard across the front. I can pick you up at the airport. I mean, if you want.

I couldnt ask you to do that, she said. I can just catch the bus home or take a taxi...

Ally,” I said. Id be happy to help. Dont worry about it.” I scrambled for a blank sheet that I wasnt going to turn into a paper airplane. What time is your flight?

Five oclock.

Airline?

TWA. Flight 1789.

Got it,I underlined the flight info and circled it twice. Why are you coming home so early? I mean, Im happy you are, but I was curious.

It was silent on her end. I want to see you.”

A church choir belted out the Hallelujahchorus in my head. You do?

Yes,she said.

Wow,I said. I strummed my fingers on the typewriter as my mind raced with images of Ally in a slinky red dress. I… I guess Ill see you soon.I winced as I heard the crack in my voice.

Brandon?

Yeah?

The line crackled and hummed. Nothing, she said. Ill see you Wednesday.

See you then,I said. We said our goodbyes and hung up. I felt my heartbeat thumping in my ears. Did I actually hear what I heard?

*****

She actually said that?Josh asked. Alyson Paige McCartney actually told you, Brandon Jo-Jo Delacruz...

Thats not my middle name,I interrupted.

“‘I want to see you,’“ he said. She used those exact words.

Yes,I said as I tried not to have the biggest smile on my face. But in my head, I was bouncing up and down like a pogo stick.

Josh smiled. You realize what this means, dont you? You need to step it up.”

Totally step it up,Robbie said.

I took off my hat and scratched my head. Step up what?

My God, do you brush your hair with a fork?Robbie asked.

I quickly put my hat back on. Is it really that bad?”

He bridged his fingers and held them in front of his face. Brandon, youre a six and a half or a seven on your best day. But Allys tall, gorgeous, athletic, and has that half-Filipino, half-white complexion. Shes like, a ten. You are way, way out of your league here. If you want to be with an angel, you gotta learn how to fly.

Hold on a second, if Im a seven...

Six and a half,he said as he stared at my head. Remind me to give you my hairdressers business card later.”

If Im a seven, then what are you?

Hey! Im not saying that Im perfect! Im like an eight...and a half.

Out of what?I asked. A hundred?

Josh put his hand on my shoulder and squeezed. You know you and Ally are my best friends in the world, right? Im pulling for you two crazy kids. So believe me when I say this: if you want this to be the best night of your life, do not, under any circumstances, be yourself.

Excuse me?I asked.

Hes right,Robbie said.

You have to be an even better version of yourself,Josh said. A version that Allys never seen. You want her to think of you as a man and not the kid from down the block. You gotta look the part, sound the part, and hell, you gotta smell the part!

Get a bottle of Polo Cologne. Or Drakkar. And for Gods sake, no Old Spice,Robbie said as he flapped his tie at me. You should come by my store. Our coats are 25% off. With my 20% discount, thats like 45%!

I see that math tutor you got has done wonders for you,I said.

Look, B,Josh said. Were not asking you to change everything.

Just the things that matter,Robbie said. Your hair, clothes, and personality.

Clearly, their idea of pep talk was tossing a drowning man an anchor. But I guess wearing a sweatshirt with coffee stains doesnt make the best of impressions. Fine,I said. What do you idiots have in mind?
