Let me get you some water.” Her mother hurried off as she acclimated herself with the waking world. How long have I been here? Her mother returned with a large, pink plastic cup with a straw. “Let’s get you sitting up.” Her mother hit the button and slowly pushed her up into an upright position.

“Better?”

“Yes,” she rasped.

“Here you are.” She held the cup out, and she wrapped her lips around a straw and sucked the cool water down her sore throat. The relief drew a hum from her throat. Pulling away, Keeta cleared her throat.

“I’m so sorry. Times run out,” her mother whispered.

“What are you talking about, Mom?” She furrowed her brow.

“We did our best to protect you, Keeta. Growing up we tried to keep you away from all things magical, but the power ran too deep. The spirits tried to tell me, but I was too stubborn to listen. You were my child, and I wanted the best for you. Your magic was a part of you that refused to be ignored or denied. So, we switched gears, tried to prepare you for what we knew would come, and hid you for as long as we could. I knew the moment I saw you and looked into your eyes you were the one our family had prophesied about.”

“Hid me from what?” Is this some sort of fever dream? Am I still in a comma?

“Everyone who would use you as a weapon.” Her mother’s whisper was full of sorrow and desperation.

“Use me? Mom, you’re not making any sense.” Exasperated, she huffed. Her body ached, and her head felt barely attached to her shoulders. A combination of the powerful medication and exhaustion that came from healing warped her perception. A hazy recollection of a dream tugged at her. What was I supposed to remember? Her brain protested the strain with a dull throbbing at her temples that stopped her from thinking too hard.

Her mother held her hand. “You’re different.”

“Yes, like our entire family is,” Keeta replied, unsure of what her mother wished to convey. She’d never been the type to beat around the bush before. Why hesitate now?

“Yes, but you have power. A scary amount of it. Things have always been drawn to you. Even with us cloaking you to dampen your light, it shone so brightly.” She closed her eyes and shook her head. “We tried to do right by you, Keeta. Now I’m not sure we were right.”

“Mom, you’re scaring me.” Her voice warbled.

“Destiny will only be denied so long, baby. Yours is at hand.”

Her stomach knotted. The storm that had been threatening overhead was finally breaking.

“Our family is made up of more than powerful magic workers. We descend from a long lineage of gifted magical beings. It goes back further than you can imagine, and some of the spells created and cast changed the shape of the world as we know it.” She glanced around nervously. “I’m not sure how much time we have. You’re a part of a bigger plan, Keeta. The laws keeping humans safe are crumbling into themselves. You can help change that. I won’t tell you it’ll be easy, or comfortable, but it’s necessary. If I could take this burden from you, I would.” She shook her head. “But it wasn’t meant for me.”

“I don’t understand. What am I supposed to do? Why?” Keeta shook her head. She’d never seen her mother this distraught. Dark circles ringed her puffy red eyes. Regret and apprehension stiffened her muscles and turned her dark brown eyes nearly black.

“I want to tell you more.” Her mother bowed her head. Her mouth clamped shut as if it’d been glued together. “Mmm. Mmmm.” She struggled to speak. Her face turned purple.

“Mom?” She gripped the blankets hard and leaned forward. “Breathe!”

Her mother gasped, greedily sucking in air as her slender form trembled. Tears rolled down her face in a steady stream of salty water. “I can’t. God help me, I can’t.” Her anguished cries sliced at Keeta’s heart.

“You can’t what?” she whimpered, feeling her mother’s pain as her own.

Exasperated, her mother threw her hands into the air and shook her head so hard she thought she might strain a muscle. “T-the d-deal,” she stuttered, stumbling over her words

“What deal?” Her stomach plummeted, and her heartbeat spiked. The monitors beeped nosily in response.

“The one she made to save your life,” a masculine voice answered from the doorway.

Her spine stiffened. The room felt too small. She shrank back against her pillow. His aura was dark and powerful. Nearly six-foot with pale blond hair, crystalline blue eyes, and cheekbones that could draw blood, he oozed strength and dominance.

Predator. He slammed against the wall, pinned into place. She gasped. Did I do that?

“Nakeeta!” her mother hissed.

She’d never been able to manifest her powers this way. She trembled. Images of the powerful medicine man and his words filled her brain. A headache burst through her head.

“Stop this,” her mother demanded.

I don’t know how. She wouldn’t share that weakness in front of this—

His eyes flashed red.

Vampire.

Charlie runs for her life, bruised and bleeding after yet another visit from her former boyfriend. The only one she can turn to is a colleague, and Carrie sends Charlie to her parents on the Islands, a safe haven where she can rest and heal.

Prepared to leave, things take an unexpected turn when Charlie finds out about the legacy some of the families on the Islands share, and how she has links to it.

Joao is about to propose to his girlfriend when his uncle calls to ask for help, and he arrives at his uncle Nico and aunt Pauline’s house to find an abused girl. As the Chief of Police and protector of the Islands, he’s used to handling situations like this, but then the girl opens her eyes and his world shifts. The turquoise gaze is a clear indication that the girl comes from the Islands, but it also cuts straight to his soul.

Charlie and Joao grow close as she adjusts to her new life, but then their lives are turned around yet again, and this time, there might not be a way back to who they were becoming together.

Seaborn is loosely linked to the Birds of a Feather series where Joao played a part in book #4, Black Snow. The story takes place after the series ends, but it is not a continuation and can be read standalone.

Excerpt

There wasn’t any other way. I’d have to trust Carrie. We’d worked on the same team for two years and weren’t friends outside the office because I couldn’t have close friends. I’d tried but he drove them off, by being rude to them until they gave up, or telling me what would happen to them if I didn’t pull back, so I stopped calling and eventually, they did too. But Carrie and I were co-workers who talked every day, so in a way, we were friends after all. And Carrie knew who my former boyfriend was, and what he was capable of.

“Okay,” I whispered. “I’ll hold on to the phone for ten more minutes, then I’ll leave it behind.”

“Shit,” Carrie said again. “Okay. Shit. Move toward the airport, Lottie.”

I closed the call without saying goodbye and started walking. Everything hurt, but now I had a plan, and that gave me the strength to keep moving, step after agonizing step. I’d pulled the hood up to cover my face and used the arm to wipe off blood as I walked, hoping the dark blue color would hide the stains. The phone was in my hand, and I answered before the first silent buzz had come to an end.

“Yeah?”

“Benito is waiting for you. Side door, west of the building.”

“Side door, west of the building,” I echoed. “Carrie?”

“Yes?”

“Thanks.”

“Oh, Lottie...”

I could hear how Carrie sniffled but didn’t know what to say to assure her everything would be okay. It wasn’t okay, and I wasn’t sure it ever would be.

 “Carrie?” I rasped out, finally.

“Yes?”

“In my real life, the one I had before him… I wasn’t Lottie then. I had a real life once, and everyone called me Charlie.”

A sob came through the phone, and a quiet, “Oh, sweetie.”

“I’ll keep moving toward the airport now.”

Then I closed the call and started the long, painful walk toward my escape. I stopped outside a convenience store to put the phone in the back of a pick-up, hoping the owners wouldn’t get hurt if someone were tracing the signal.

When I reached the airport terminal, my head was spinning, and it felt as if I was stumbling along in a strange bubble where all sounds were warped, and the only emotion available was a dull, thumping pain.

“Side door, west of the building,” I repeated as a mantra, placing one foot in front of the other until I walked straight into a man.

“Jesus. Fuck, what the –”

I tried to smile and used the sleeve of her hoodie to wipe away sweat and blood from eyes which were swollen almost completely shut.

“Benito?” I asked.

“You’re Carries friend?”

“Yeah.”

“Jesus,” he repeated and reached for me.

“I’m good,” I mumbled and sidestepped. “No one can know I’m here.”

“I know,” he said. “Shit. Okay, let’s go.”

He led me around the building, through a gate, and over the tarmac. When I was sitting in one of the passenger seats, he tilted the chair all the way back and wrapped a blanket gently around me.

“Thank you,” I slurred. “Don’t talk about me on the radio.”

“What?”

“He might hear. There can’t be any trails to follow.”

“Okay, honey. Okay. Shit. Just rest, and we’ll leave in a few minutes.”

There was no way I’d relax, not as long as he could find me, but it was nice to take the weight off my aching foot and close the small slits that were my eyes. Then the engines roared, the plane started moving, and finally – we were in the air.

Silently, hot tears started running across my temples and into my dirty and blood-streaked hair. Two minutes later, I slept.

The proper way to put it here would probably be to describe how I love to play with our two big dogs, adore my fantastic daughters and how much I love to read.

Another way would be to use my imagination and then I would be a super powerful warrior woman, think Xena the warrior princess (though with less tacky clothes). Or when I think of it, maybe I’m actually more of a HerculePoirot (sans the suit and moustache). Or maybe I’m like Aragorn, strong and cool and then I might get to meet Gandalf! Or I could be Bella’s pretty cousin and snap Jacob up in a second (yeah, I’m so not team Edward), or wait, maybe I could be like one of them  heroines in historical novels who swoon all the time. I’ve always wanted to swoon…

Well, I guess you get how my mind is working (or not working, some say).

Anyways, I like to write. Stories, adventures, romantic and happy stuff mixed up with sorrow and hardship, and bit of laughter here and there because the way I see it – life is way too short to go around feeling grumpy.

Read an Excerpt:

Asoka was sitting on the steps to the throne, fastening his knee-high boots when Chanakya entered the chamber in his wheeled chair, dressed not in his usual long robe, but a cotton undershirt. Asoka did not look up but kept tightening the straps of his boots with both hands. The burning torches dispelled the darkness that blanketed everything outside.
As Chanakya rolled forward, his shadow fell upon the throne. “Why are you in armour, Prince?” he asked.
“I am in armour because we are under siege,” Asoka said, finishing his task.
“We have been under siege for a week,” Chanakya reminded him.
“But tonight the enemy is hammering at our walls,” Asoka replied, pointing a thumb over his shoulder.
“The walls will hold Prince.”
“I do not doubt that. It is I who cannot hold on any longer.”
Chanakya wheeled nearer. “What do you mean?”
Asoka got to his feet. “Order the Captain of the Guards to assemble his reserve force at the stables.” “But why?” Chanakya asked, perplexed.
Asoka looked down at him. “I plan to sally out,” he said coolly.
“I beg your pardon, Prince, but why such a foolhardy action?”
“It is military slang,” Asoka explained, looking around for his shield, “sallying out signifies a foray by the defenders, in the middle of the night, to carry out a surprise raid on the besieger’s camp.”
“Well you are not sallying out,” Chanakya said firmly.
“Why do you say that, Prime Minister?”
“Isn’t it obvious? It is dangerous!”
“Great things cannot be achieved without facing danger, Prime Minister. You of all people should know that.”
“Great things!” Chanakya laughed mockingly. “What do you plan to achieve by sallying out, Prince?”
“Small things in this case,” Asoka replied, reaching for his scabbard. “We have about forty horses in the stables, Prime Minister. I and some of the city guards will ride out under the cover of night and raid Sushem’s camp. I am certain we will catch his men totally unawares. If we are lucky, perhaps Maharaja Sushem will fall to my sword.”
“And if you are unlucky,” Chanakya said, “you may fall to his.”
Asoka shrugged as he pulled out his sword and checked its sharp edge by moving a finger over it. “I am not afraid of dying,” He said.
“You do not need to do this, Prince,” Chanakya pleaded. “Everything is under control.”
Asoka pushed his sword back into the scabbard. “Everything will be under control once I am done with this raid,” he said softly.
“Your friend, Shiva of Avanti, comes with your army soon,” Chanakya said, following Asoka in his chair. “He will attack Sushem from behind and force him to lift the siege. That is the plan!”
“The plan!” Asoka stopped and turned around. “Is that your plan? Is that what you wish the people of Patliputra to say, that they were saved by others while their leader hid in the palace?” “Even your grandfather, Chandragupta, was not afraid to hide,” Chanakya said. “He knew that…”
“Stop!” Asoka said, raising one hand. “Look well, Prime Minister! Look at who stands before you! I am not my grandfather. I do not look like him. I do not think like him. Nor do I speak like him. But I am sure about one thing. If he were in my shoes today, he would do the same as I.”
“You are making a mistake,” Chanakya told him. “You will regret it later.”
Asoka sighed. “I regret not doing this on the first day of the siege.”
